A large target for my equipment and I didn't think I would have time to do a mosaic, but the weather was actually cooperative. This started as participating in the monthly Beginner's Deep Sky Imaging Challenge on CloudyNights. After a hiatus over the late summer for various travels and activities, it took a bit to get back in the groove for both acquisition and basic processing. let alone going into building three mosaics and playing with narrowband processing, somethiing I haven't done much of yet.

Data acquired over 4 nights across October and early Novermber yielded fairly well balanced panels in each of Ha, Sii and Oiii, with the Ha being roughly 14 x 5 minutes, the Oiii 20 and the Sii 24 subs per panel for 4 panel mosaics in each. Mosaic processing was done using PI's PMM scripts by John Murphy. My approach was then just to process each sub-mosaic through to a finished image , trying to keep the background around 0.12-0.15, but also by eyeball. I used the SHO-AIP script to create an L-SHO image for final processing: some tweaking of contrast, saturation , noise reduction and sharpening of the final image was needed on top of what was already in each sub-mosaic panel.

More experience processing these SHO images will surely help, as would adding more totat i-time. I will try the linear-fit approach to narrowband processing and see how I get on with it. So far the way I am going seems to be working, even if it seems to be a bit unconventional.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
