Description

M94 (NGC 4736) is 'high in the sky', and an easy galaxy to find at this time of year. At 16 million LY from us it presents little detail in the eyepiece, in part due to a bright core. Longer exposures help to bring out the detail, and you start to see why it is known as the croc's eye or cat's eye galaxy.

Capturing the surrounding halo, whilst avoiding burning out the core is a challenge and really needs layering of images of different exposures. My image is based on 90 mins exposure using 15min subs, and with excessive sharpening, only just starts to draw out the detail, but not the outermost arms which are only seen in the largest aperture pictures.
