Description

This image of the large spiral galaxy NGC 1232 shows the colors of different regions which are clearly visible: the old stars give a reddish color to the center while the ends of the spiral are filled with younger blue stars and many regions of star formation. Note the nearby small galaxy resembling a Greek letter "theta".

NGC 1232 is 20 degrees south of the celestial equator in the constellation Eridanus. Its distance is about 100 million light years from us. At the distance indicated, the width of the image corresponds to about 200,000 light years, or twice the size of the Milky Way.

This image is a classic combination of LRGB filters
