Description

Here is my version of M31 the Andromeda Galaxy! Andromeda is one of my favorite deep sky objects, I've always found it stunningly beautiful and love that it's close enough to see a lot of detailed structure within the galaxy. I put a TON of time into this one with over 28 hours of total integration time, perhaps a bit of overkill but I wanted to give it my best attempt with my equipment and skies.

The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy 2.5 million light years distant and is the largest galaxy in our local group of galaxies. M31 is moving toward the Milky Way and will collide with our home galaxy in roughly 4 billion years. There are some really cool videos out there I'd suggest looking up that show what the night sky will look like as Andromeda gets closer and closer to us. I was surprised to learn that Andromeda is actually a barred spiral galaxy like the Milky Way, you can’t see it in the visual spectrum due to its angle relative to us. Also in the image are two of Andromeda's satellite galaxies, M32 and M110 which orbit the galaxy similar to how the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds orbit the Milky Way. When you zoom into the image you can also see several of Andromeda's estimated 460 globular clusters and a number of red HII star forming regions which popped when I integrated the Ha data into the image.
