Description

I am experimenting, for the first time, using a color astronomy camera, cooled, and a narrow-band imaging technique to capture some spiral galaxies, such as in the M81 galaxy group, in Ursa Major. Ny sequence of pictures shows (a) an "overview" of the M81 group in which at least two galaxies in addition to M81 and M82 are also visible, namely, NGC 3077 at the top and NGC 2976 at the bottom left, (b) M81 and its M82 companion galaxy, and (c) Bode's galaxy, M81, itself. The overview image (the other two being crops of it) is based on 119x3 min (= 5.95 hours) sub exposures acquired on 10, 11 and 20 April 2022 and processed using AstroPixelProcessor and further tweaked with ProDigital Software's AstroFlat Pro. Notably, the images on 20 April were acquired while clouds drifting in and out of observation. Some of these images came out with light gradients that have impacted the final integrated image. I retained them on the grounds that the center of the image, which was centered on M81, was not too severely impacted. Given that I observe from a class 8 Bortle location I tend not to be overly picky, rejecting only downright bad images. The 20th April images, unfortunately, constitute about 57% of the total number of lights processed.
