The Omicron team is very proud to present to you a very deep image of the Coma cluster.
The Coma Cluster (Abell 1656) is a large cluster of galaxies that contains over 1,000 identified galaxies. The central region is dominated by two supergiant elliptical galaxies: NGC 4874 and NGC 4889. The cluster is within a few degrees of the north galactic pole on the sky. Most of the galaxies that inhabit the central portion of the Coma Cluster are ellipticals. Both dwarf and giant ellipticals are found in abundance in the Coma Cluster.
Serge Brunier started it in March and the bad weather didn't help us finish it. We just managed to finish the color last night. We didn't manage to get more than 7 hours of luminance even though we wanted 12. But it doesn't matter, it's too low now and the image still reaches magnitude 25.1! The seeing was average to good with 5h30 at 1,9" kept for the background and the extensions and 1h30 at 1,35" for the high lights.
The full image shows thousands of galaxies in the field, some of which are far beyond the cluster. Dozens of globular clusters are also visible around giant galaxies. Yes, globulars at 320 million light years !!

In 2014, a group of researchers from the Stony Brook University (the State University of New York) and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan has discovered 854 "ultra dark galaxies" in the Coma Cluster by analyzing archival data from the Subaru Telescope. The discovery of 47 such mysterious dark galaxies was a surprising find in 2014, and the new discovery of more than 800 suggests galaxy clusters as the key environment for the evolution of these mysterious dark galaxies (source subaru telescope.org). Those galaxies are very likely enveloped by something very massive, like black matter.
