Description

NGC 247 is a fine example of an intermediate spiral galaxy showing some nice features and a smattering of Ha dusted around the spiral arms. The galaxy is located approximately 11.2 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus (the Whale) and is part of the Sculptor Group. The size of the galaxy is estimated to be about 70,000 light years across which makes it somewhat smaller that our home galaxy, the Milky Way (with a diameter of approximately 100,000 light years). The galaxy has a quite noticeable distinguishing feature in the form of a void leading to a common name of the "Claw" galaxy.

The Tak TSA120/QSI683 combination used for this project is not what one would call a galaxy hunter due to the 1.5 degree field of view. It is ok for some galaxy fields though and particularly with this one given the nice array of background galaxies present in lots of interesting shapes and sizes.
