Description

This image is a common grouping of objects for astrophotographers but, nevertheless, it's one of those areas of the cosmos that would be hard pressed to have too many images showing off its beauty. I'd like to thank a fellow DVAA club member and astrophotographer, John Leimgruber, for recently posting a similar composition of this grouping in false color. His image inspired me to try my hand at these objects.  Here is my attempt taken using a one-shot-color (OSC) camera with an IDAS NBZ dual-band filter using RGB processing.

The constellations of Cassiopeia the Queen and Cepheus the King are filled with beautiful regions of Hydrogen gas (HII regions) and clusters of stars. This image depicts the rich area around the famous Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635 or Sh2-162) between the constellations Cepheus and Cassiopeia. In addition to the Bubble Nebula (upper right-center), the main subjects featured in the image are the Lobster Claw Nebula (Sh2-157, left center), Sh2-161 (the vast HII area on the lower right), NGC 7538 (the brightest nebula in the lower right) and the star clusters NGC 7510 (bottom-left, under the Claw) and M52 (top-right, to the right of the Bubble). Sh2-159 is a small patch of nebulae near the center between all three of the larger nebulae regions.

The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) is the most famous object in this image. It is surrounded by nebula Sh2-162, a cloud of glowing hydrogen gas located approximately 10,000 light years away. The large Open Star Cluster M52 is to the upper right of the Bubble, and is located 4,980 light years away. This Open Star cluster offers a fantastic view in any small telescope.

Halfway between the Lobster Claw and The Bubble Nebula is a newborn star (a tiny orange squiggle shaped nebula beside the star) this is Herbig-Haro 170. Herbig-Haro objects form when gas ejected by the stars collides at high speed with surrounding clouds of gas and dust. You will need to zoom in a little to see this object.
