Description

This image shows a pair of interacting galaxies located 85 million light years away in the constellation of Libra at a declination of -7 degrees. As shown in the mouseover, NGC 5917 is on the left and  PGC 54817 is on the right.

This pair was classified by Dr. Arp as Arp 254 and included in his category called "Galaxies with the Appearance of Fission".  I always get a kick out of the fact that Dr. Arp believed that interacting pairs such as this one were not in the process of merging but separating.

Both of these galaxies are small and are considered to be irregular galaxies.  The apparent size of each is about 1.5 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a diameter of just 40,000 light years.

The shape of the tidal stream of PGC 54817 is unique, leading to its nickname of the "Hooked Galaxy". The stream's length covers 160,000 light years, 4x that of each galaxy.  It appears to my eyes that the star stream completely connects these 2 galaxies, but there is a span in question just to the right of NGC 5917.

The 3 faint orangish galaxies to the lower right are all about 800 million light years away.
