Description

NGC 6853 is called the Dumbbell Nebula. It is a planetary nebula 1360 light years distant. It has nothing to do with planets, the early astronomers were confused by the shape and the term plantetary nebula has stuck. It consists of very rarified gas that has been ejected from the hot central white dwarf star now in one of the last evolutionary stages. The gas atoms in the nebula are excited (heated) by the intense ultraviolet radiation from this star and emit strongly at specific wavelengths.
