The 14.1 Days old Moon

The day after a typhoon should be sunny with blue sky followed by a clear starry night. The day was clear but the night revealed thin cloud layers, high humidity and irregular air flow. On top of this, the maximum elevation of the Moon surrounded by a faint halo in Scorpius near the star Antares was only 40º, but hey, it is summer, so I rolled the gear out and started imaging when the moon was at 28.7º elevation.

At an age of 14.1 days and 99.5% illuminated the only shadows casted were near the northwestern limb at +3.5º libration in latitude. Libration in longitude at -5.2º shifts a few features of the far side into view but still in shadow.

At 372,250 km distance and angular size of 32.12 arc min the moon shone bright and pulled a tidal force of 1.1 while its radial velocity was -47.7m/s towards Earth at an orbital velocity of 1.035km/s. The apparent size of Earth as viewed from the lunar equator was 1.972º.

The ringing around crater walls is due to air turbulences as the moon looked like seen through clear flowing water. As seeing wasn't good at all, I've chosen short 5ms exposure and stacked 600 frames out of 10000. All 8-bit monochrome images are 1.5x drizzled.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
