Description

NGC 6239 is a disturbed spiral in Hercules. Redshift puts it about 61 to 83 million light-years with a median value of 73 million. This galaxy has loops on the eastern side and plumes on the western side that indicate some hapless even smaller galaxy was digested by it in the recent past. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey detected (barely perceptible on the right side of NGC 6239 on my image) two large spikes sticking out. At UGC 5904, the interaction with a dwarf creates a stream which connects the galaxies.
