Description

NGC 6960, the Western Veil Nebula, is a prominent component of the larger Veil supernova remnant found within Cygnus. Beautiful, delicate filaments of ionized hydrogen and oxygen are seen throughout the foreground and background.  Picturing a supernova remnant from a planar perspective is challenging as a true representation would be the three-dimensional representation of spherical shells of gas, expanding radially.  This high resolution perspective taken at a focal length of 3000mm captures a small sliver of this truly immense deep space object, covering an immense area of the sky on the order of six times the diameter of the moon.  The star, 52 Cyg, can be prominently seen as a central point of focus in this image.

A bi-color imaging process was chosen for this image, opting to neglect the prominent ionized sulfur.  Supernova remnants present a great deal of overlap in the hydrogen and sulfur signals, leading to processing challenges in differentiating the two.  RGB stars were shot and blended.

This image marks the first of many productive collaborations between the two of us!  The processing of the acquired data was conducted together, allowing the two of us to provide constructive criticism and share the techniques we’ve individually developed.
