Description

M101 is my nemesis since it's such a beast to process. I've never been happy with it. However, I was able to add a good amount of RGB data last couple of months to what I had from the previous year's data for a total of 42 hours RGB and 5 hours of Ha. There are a boatload of other tiny galaxies in this field.

Messier 101 also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy is 170,000 light-years across and 21 million light years distant from Earth. It is nearly twice the diameter of our galaxy. M101 is estimated to contain at least one trillion stars. The galaxy’s spiral arms are sprinkled with large regions of star-forming nebulae appearing as red structures.
