NGC 2024 RGB with Ha

I've been fascinated by this emission nebula also know as the Flame Nebula. There is so much going on in the Orion molecular cloud star forming complex...certainly worth all the Astrobin photos. I decided to go deep on this part...an RGB image with a bit of Ha blended in and Ha used as the luminance. I went for a dramatic and pretty picture. Amazing detail from B7 and SQM 18.15 skies with the new RC tools. I particularly like the area immediately above the bright belt star Alnitak which is only partly visible.

About the stars: I watched a video with Russell Croman the other day where he was discussing star size. In reality they should be pin points, but with our atmosphere and large FWHM we are used to seeing them as "large" objects. I applied the default BXT settings to my linear Ha. When I used this as luminance the stars became points. It looked a bit weird to me, so I first thought to only apply the lum to the starless images...but then I remembered Russell's discussion. So I'm liking the pin point stars now.

One thing I love about this hobby, but also find frustrating, are the multitudes of processing decisions that give completely different results. I started from scratch 3 or 4 times and frankly don't know which one I like the most. I want to start from scratch again and backoff the BXT sharpening and be less dramatic, but based on my limited processing time available...had to draw a line in the sand and post.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status.
