Description

The Flaming Star Nebula, IC 405. It’s both an emission nebula and a reflection nebula lit up by the “flaming” bluish star AE Aurigae. It’s about 1,500 light years away in the constellation Auriga and is about five light years across. It’s thought that the star migrated there from the Orion’s Belt region.

Unfortunately, this image is a bit flawed in that the focus is very slightly off. But others have told me they still like this picture. It’s a bit reminiscent of the Steely Dan album Katy Lied. Becker & Fagen refused to ever listen to that album because they discovered a systemic flaw in the master tapes after the album had gone to press. They said it made the entire album unlistenable. It’s still one of my favorite albums of all time. I think it sounds incredible.

This is one of the first images we have taken with the Hyperstar attachment. Hyperstar is a lens kit that attaches to the front of a Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and essentially turns it into a Ross-Ackerman-Schmidt Astrograph (RASA). A RASA can ONLY have a camera mounted on the front. That dramatically shortens the focal length—in this case from 2,800mm to 540mm—but that also dramatically increases the field of view and shortens the needed exposure times. There are many large objects in the night sky that we simply cannot get in a single frame at full focal length. One of the reasons I went with a Celestron scope was this type of versatility.
