Description

I captures this section of M31 Andromeda Galaxy using my 127mm Maksutov telescope.
Historically, M31 has a fundamental, since Edwin Hubble was able to calculate the distance of M31 from the earth using the Cepheid variable method (H.W. Leavitt).
In M31 he searched for Cepheid variables. First he thought he found only a "regular" Nova (no distinction between nova, supernova, hypernova etc. until 1930s) but later he recognized it's a Cepheid variable so he renamed the star "VAR" (for variiable).
He was further able to proof that there is no "giant Galaxy" but "island of galaxies" ("Big Debate" of 1920 - Curtis vs. H. Shapley). This changed our cosmic view forever.
