Description

M1 Crab Nebula in SHO

A striking supernova remnant with the initial supernova being document in 1054. The supernova brightness could be seen for 23 days during the daytime and 654 nights. Named the crab nebula because it was thought to look like a crab in the 1840s.

The nebula is about 6,300 light years from earth and has been accurately measured to be 11x 13 light years. The nebula continues to expand at 1,800 km/second allowing astronomers to track the expansion over a 12 year period. The different colored filaments represent a combination of elements released in the supernova. Green hydrogen, red sulfur, and blue oxygen along with many more elements that give different shades in the filaments.

I have a OSC color version that I plan to enhance with the narrowband data hopefully in the near future.
