Description

Sh2-284 is a faint emission nebula in Monoceros. It is the southernmost in a chain of nebulae below the Rosette Nebula, and it is by far the most interesting of the three. I particularly like the M16-like tendrils in the central area. The OIII signal is also surprisingly strong, with a distinct patch of Oxygen the extends to the north (right in this image).

The small nebula at the upper-right here is NGC2282, which is a reflection nebula with a strong emission component. The other small nebula at center-right is BFS53. (It surprises me that Sharpless missed this one, as it is fairly bright and distinct.)The data for this image were acquired in collaboration with Charles Pevsner from DeepSkyChile.
