Description

The spiral galaxy NGC253 (Sculptor galaxy, Silver Coin Galaxy) in the constellation Sculptor (one of about a dozen galaxies in the Sculptor Group) at around 11 million light years away. The true size of the galaxy is estimated at around 70,000 light years (comparable to our milky way) but is actually a lot less luminous. Nevertheless, it is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky and is an impressive sight both visually and photographically with many features to show off such as the complex dust lanes and patches of nebulosity seen throughout. A real gem of the southern sky!
