Description

The Rosette nebula has been on my wish list for many long years and never been able to fulfil till now when bringing back an old CI-700 to a useful astrophotographic tool made this one possible. And the addition to OnStep GOTo controller (self made) to it made it way easier, as before then I'd have to visually identify the subject (luckily most of the have an open cluster within) to frame the subject. In the finder, that is.

Initially I started with my old DSLR workhorse, the Canon 40D (full-spectrum astro modified by Astronomiser). Great camera but a little dated and prone to walking noise and random hot pixels. Then brought to the fore the new-kid-in-the-block, the Nikon D5100, which I bought cheap on eBay and modified to full spectrum by a chap in Rumania. Which was tested both with and without IR-Cut 2" filter in front of the FF but at the moment I can't still tell whether it makes any difference or not. For this latter I had to cook up a USB to Remote controller cable as the D5100 won't take Bulb exposures through the USB cable. That in itself was quite an adventure. If anybody needs one just drop me a message.

So essentially this image is made with scraps and test shots taken with the same instrument but with two different DSLRs at two different image scales.

Given that today is St. Silvester I guess a partying shot to 2020 in the form of a Stellar Firework is due and recommended. This is mine.
