Description

I have been out of action since mid July as I have embarked on a significant equipment upgrade project. After pulling down my C14 and Paramount MX+, I experienced some delays mostly related to getting some ancillary equipment manufactured...mounting plates etc.
I will detail the project in another post.
Meanwhile, with the atrocious weather we have been having I have had limited opportunities to both commission the new rig and get some imaging done. 
However, we had a totally clear night this week (19th September) and having reset up the C14 and collimating the scope, I was surprised by the excellent seeing. It was a golden opportunity, given the GRS was in transit on Jupiter and its bold red colour always adds something to a Jupiter image. The planet is really large at nearly 50" at the moment as it approaches opposition. 
In fact the seeing was so good, I think the resultant image is one of my best ever of Jupiter. Quelle surprise!
I have recently started using the Player One Saturn-M SQR camera and I am really liking the results. The smaller pixels (3.8 microns), mean I don't need as powerful a barlow to get the image scale I am after to not lose resolution (0.08 arc secs per pixel). I was using a Tele Vue 3X barlow with the ZWO ASI 174MM giving me a 13.5m focal length. Here I use the Tele Vue 2X barlow at a focal length of ~ 9.4m (equivalent to 2.4X). The large square sensor (243" x 243") makes for a larger FOV when imaging the Moon and also means there is more likelihood of the planet landing on the sensor when I slew to it. For my previous set up the FOV was only 172" x108".
Revisions B, C & D, show respectively annotated RGB, IR & Methane Band images. Again the excellent seeing meant the resolution was excellent and the Methane Band image is amongst the best I have produced.
