Description

NGC 7822 is a star-forming region in the constellation of Cepheus. It is estimated to be 2,900 light years from Earth. The region of bright nebulosity in the center left is Sharpless 171, the prominent emission nebula within NGC 7822.  The young star cluster Berkeley 59, within Sharpless 171, is shaping the interior with its stellar winds (flows of gas and matter emitted by the young stars). Sharpless 171 resembles an open jaw with pillars for teeth. These pillars are regions of star formation. Star-forming pillars can be seen in many emission nebula and were made famous in the iconic "Pillars of Creation" image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.
