Description

From 5h 25m LRGB data.

This area has a lot going on. The central orange star is T Tauri (HD-284419) - the prototype for T Tauri variable stars described by Alfred Joy in 1945.
It is a young star that is not performing hydrogen fusion yet. It has a circumstellar disc that radiates strongly in the ultraviolet. The energy from the disk supplies bipolar jets (Herbig - Haro objects), and the radiation colliding with the surrounding molecular cloud makes the reflection nebula, NGC-1555 (Sh2-238). John Russell Hind discovered the nebula on October 11, 1852. Herbig-Haro objects are relatively short-lived, and NGC-1555 varies in brightness - in the 1860s it disappeared for a while. T Tauri is a triple star.  Its two companions are optically invisible, but the major energy outflow is thought to come from T Tauri South, not T Tauri North seen in this image.
