Description

PuWe 1 is one of the largest and faintest planetaries in Lynx at a relatively close distance of 1200 light years.  It was discovered by Alois Purgathofer and Ronald Weinberger in 1980 while analyzing plates from the Palomar Deep Sky Survey.

The OIII signal is slightly fainter than Ha.  Since the OIII lacked any detail, a significant amount of Ha allowed interior details to be enhanced.  There is a faint Ha lobe visible along the "bottom" of the nebula and a few detached Ha wisps visible "above" it.  Although there is a general lack of background Ha, there is a significant amount of integrated flux nebula (IFN) in the area of the image.  See "revisions" for starless images of Ha, OIII and Lum as well as a closeup showing the location of the central star.

Imaged over several nights:  12/05, 19-21, 2023; 1/2-4, 7, 2024.
