Description

Lake Tekapo, one of the most beautiful night sky locations New Zealand has to offer.

This panorama was taken from the summit of Mount John, home to New Zealands largest telescope belonging to the University of Caterbury, along with an observatory home to three other telescopes. Having to hike up this mountain in darkness would be one of the more unnerving things I've done in a while as a fifteen year old. I choose this location as I also had hopes of capturing a double meteor shower - the Geminids and a predicted shower by Comet 46P Wirtanen. Unfortunately, I only managed to see about 15 large meteors, still beautiful nonetheless.

However, the view of Lake Tekapo, the southern alps, a little bit of Aurora Australis made this the most magical night I've experienced during my short time so far in this hobby.
