Description

A target of opportunity. I had gone to setup to capture the eagle nebula when both of my weather apps and google said clear skies and no wind. We all know what happened next, I had 90% cloud cover. The only part of the sky that clear was to the west. Thankfully the M3 globular cluster just happened to be in that pocket of sky. I had wanted to try my hand at another globular cluster after capturing M13 earlier this year.

A quick image with not much exposure time and a fair amount of noise, but still fun to see my progress from M13. Also, another Messier object to check off the list.

M3 is a globular cluster that sits 33,000 light years above the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy approximately 34,000 light years away. It’s approximately 360 light years in diameter and is estimated to contain 500k stars. The cluster has an age of approximately 8 billion years with predominant long lived red stars that are less than our solar mass. The large blue stars are named blue stragglers as all of the original high mass blue stars have exhausted their hydrogen fusion supply and gone supernova with remnant white dwarf stars or possibly low mass black holes. The blue stragglers in the image are possibly younger stars than the rest of the cluster and form from a rare event with the merger of smaller mass stars.
