Description

The barred spiral galaxy NGC 3718 or ARP 214 is located in the constellation of the Great Bear about 52 million light years. Bluish condensation can be seen on the arms where high star formation occurs. It has a yellowish nucleus due to the older stars, which is crossed by a spectacular band of dark dust. You can also see the group of galaxies known as Hickson 56 and the galaxy NGC 3729 at the bottom of the image. The latter may be to blame for the strange form of NGC 3718 being only 150,000 light years away.
