Description

The Coma Star Cluster (Melotte 111)

Here is a type of target that I don't often image, an open cluster. Honestly, I thought they were boring. Its not as satisfying as processing galaxies or nebulae. It is so fast to process, it just feels weird. However, turns out I quite like how it turned out. I love the calm that emanates out of it. But when you take the time to look at the full resolution image and browse through it, you can find many small galaxies, far in the deepness of space. I always get lost and lose track of time and clear my mind looking through those.

A bit of details: Located at 280 ly away from us, the cluster contains about 40 brighter stars. Those stars make out a distinctive "V" shape in the Coma Berenices constellation. It covers an area of more than 7.5 degrees on the sky and it is approximately 450 million years old. Note that we don't see this the shape clearly on my image, even with the large field of view of my setup, the whole cluster doesn't fit into one frame.
