Description

IC2177, also known as the Seagull Nebula, is a diffuse emission nebula located in the constellation Monoceros. It is approximately 3,700 light years away from Earth and spans about 100 light years in diameter. The nebula gets its name from its shape, which resembles a seagull in flight. The "wings" of the seagull are formed by the glowing gas and dust clouds, which are illuminated by the radiation from hot, young stars embedded within them.IC2177 is a very active star-forming region, and it contains numerous young, massive stars that are responsible for ionizing the surrounding gas and producing the nebula's distinctive glow. In addition, there are several dark nebulae within IC2177, which are regions of dense gas and dust that block the light from background star
