Description

Jones-Emberson 1 also known as PK 164+31.1 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Lynx.  It's about 1600 light years away and 3 light years in diameter. It's common name is the Headphone Nebula due to its lobed shape. The tiny blue star in the center is a blue-white dwarf that is the remnant of the star that produced this giant gas bubble as it expelled it's outer layer at the end of it life. This star continues to fuel and illuminate these ionized hydrogen (red) and ionized oxygen (blue) gasses as they expand out into interstellar space.
