Description

This is by far the most interesting project I've ever worked on; I badly wanted to realize the photo of Wolf-Rayet 134 variable star and its surrounding area, so I've been thinking a lot about it.
There are two versions of this story: a short one and a long version.

You can jump to the short one, that sounds like this: "Here you can find the result, I hope you like it, and thanks for watching".

If you want the long version, here it is.
Without any doubts, to realize this project, I had to go to the mountains, under dark skies and beautiful seeing.
The winter and spring were cold and cloudy here, I hadn't taken any pictures from the mountains since my SH2-129 OU4, that I made on 28-29/10/2022. For SH2-129 OU4 (and in general for itinerant pictures), I bought on purpose my new mount Eq6-Ri Pro, and I never used anymore since now. So you can imagine how excited I was just to use the new mount after 8 months of pause and only 2 nights done with it.

On Saturday June 24th, I left my house with a lot of bags, to reach a good dark sky (Bortle 4) at 1000 meters of altitude, in a wood.
Because of the summer, I had to start the light frames only at 23:15, and as far as this place is far from my house, I stopped at 2:45 to go back. In that night, I shot at 384mm f/4.8, with L-eNhance, with the gain of the Asi 294Mc Pro at 230 (unusual for me), to see if I could reach that depth that I wanted, given the limited time available. At home, the next day, I was quite happy of the result, but clearly it was not enough. So i planned the next session for the beginning of the next month.

Saturday July 8th. In these two weeks I have had time to think a lot on these trips and their meaning for me. Some of my friends here know what I mean; since a couple of years (after 8 years spent doing AP under the Bortle 8 of my city) I started to do some seldom trips under darker sky. In the beginning I was using the Star Adventurer, dslr and camera lens, then I started to use the cooled camera, then the telescope. In the end, as I wrote, I bought a brand new mount with goto to use the more time as possible collecting photons, without wasting time, given these seldom occasions. But with the time, I realized that I actually love being in the woods at night, with the sound of the wind, the peaceful dark, the fresh air of the forest, and the Universe above me. Often, if not always, I also see its inhabitants, wonderful animals (I'll talk more later about this topic). The AP and being in the woods and nature at night, has become one thing. So, back to the topic, what did I think? That it was a pity to interrupt the night to get home in time to still be able to drive. So I bought a folding camping cot bed! Yes, a real bed to sleep under the stars! And a winter sleeping bag (even if it's summer, the night can be cold beeing outside at 1000 meters, just under the Sky). Actually this first night I was a little bit anxious, never having slept right out in the forest, with nothing overhead but the stars. But i'ts happened the magic: during the night, the night birds sang their songs and the crickets too, it was a tender music for my ears, I slept sweetly, with a inner peace that I can't describe (even to don't make this text longer...). And last but not least, as far as I knew there would be too much moonlight at this date, I bought on purpose for this project and received in time for this trip, the new L-Ultimate filter. So on July 8th, I shot at 384mm f/4.8, with L-Ultimate, with the gain of the Asi 294Mc Pro at 230.

Sunday July 9th: given the great experience of the previous day, I decided to go also at Sunday evening, although this was more complicated for the incoming Monday.  The reason it's because of the clear sky and because I started to swap to a different focal lenght, 480 f/6, to get some more details of the subject. So I shot at 480 f/6, with L-Ultimate, with the gain of the Asi 294Mc Pro at 230.

Friday July 14th. I added also a bed pillow to my 'gear' (not a simple travel pillow like before), plus I also brought some late night snacks. In total, my luggage consists now of 6 bags and one bed, 5.5 linear meters! They fill the whole car, I have not brought so many suitcases even for the holiday. Sleeping in the woods by now it has become pure poetry for me, I sleep and hear the night birds, some not too cold wind on my face remembers me in my dreams where I am, if I wake up at night and open my eyes I see shooting stars or M31, like it happened. I want to clarify that, of course, I start sleeping as late as possible in the night, and before I manage the telescope and appreciate the sky; so I rest some hours before driving home, which is not nearby. In this date I started to shot with my usual gain (120) at 480mm f/6, with L-Ultimate.

Saturday July 15th. This was the date by which the project was scheduled to end, I left home with great enthusiasm for this adventure. I shot at 384 f/4.8, gain 120, with Uv-IR filter, to collect RGB for the stars.

Friday August 25th. I've been working a lot of hours on the processing (I started from scratch not less than 10 times), but frankly I couldn't reach the depth I wanted from the beginning. So I decided to do a last trip, using the L-Ultimate, at 480mm f/6 gain 120. The nights started to be longer so it was a great idea, I could collect some more precious hours, still enjoying the magic of the place. So now one can understand also why I already posted other photos that I shoot later than WR134 (i.e. Barnard 150 and Dark Shark Nebula).

The new mount worked exceptionally well in these nights, I had a rsm from 0.16 up to 0.35, on average I think around 0.25.
Finally, I choosed this kind of framing (which is quite wide if compared to all the pictures awarded on AB, that I checked before choosing), because I love the shell nebula as well as the dark clouds, for my taste they add something interesting.
In this photo I didn't used all my dataset, just some (i.e. I didn't use the 24/6 and 8/7 data and not those with L-eNhance filter), because the project is not completed; I still have to work on the more wide framing at 384mm (this is at 480mm), so something is yet to come.

So, that's almost all I have to say about the story behind this photograph. Not only I purchased the L-Ultimate filter, but also a bed and a winter sleeping bag, which is quite fun and fascinating in how life can be. I never thought I'd sleep alone in just a bed in the woods, without any roof or camping tent (sounds so funny), and now I would like to be there the more often as possible.

A final word for the friends of the forest as promised (those who follow me, know what I mean): during my travels I have seen something like 4 deers, 12 foxes (some mothers with very young and small cubs), a hedgehog, a porcupine, a squirrel, and wild boars, great experiences!

So now... yes, "Here you can find the result, I hope you like it, and thanks for watching" (and the patience in reading, if you did!).
