Description

It is an H II region located in the Sagittarius Arm at a distance of about 2200 parsecs from the solar system; those responsible for the ionization of its gases will be two stars of apparent magnitude 11.49 and 12.45 respectively. The bright source of radio waves W42 extends in their direction, about whose distance there is some disagreement: some estimates propose 2200 parsecs, thus indicating a clear association with Sh2-60, while other estimates indicate a much greater distance, up to 13400 parsecs.  thus placing this source near the galactic center.
W42 consists of a very dense cloud receiving intense radiation from a young, dense, massive open cluster of spectral class O and B stars deeply embedded in a dense cloud of dust; this cluster seems to emerge through thinned out areas of the nebula that have undergone photoevaporation by radiation from their own stars.
