Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a 2 degree long faint dark nebula located in the constellation of Orion at a declination of +7 degrees.  As you can see in the mouseover, the single Barnard object is comprised of multiple LDN objects, which is not unusual.

Of course, the subject is upstaged by the wonderful Betelgeuse, who is the star of the show here.  This magnitude 0.4 red supergiant is the eastern shoulder of Orion, the 10th brightest star in the sky, and one of the largest known stars.

The combination of the extremely bright star with the very faint nebula made this image a difficult one to process.
