Description

NGC 7822 in Hubble Palette

Here is my latest try at this "unnamed" nebula in Cepheus. I tried this nebula last year using a OSC camera and the Optolong L-eNhance filter, but the results were merely reddish due to the overwhelming presence of Ha emissions. In this try with a monochrome camera, I made sure to capture ample amounts of OIII and SII data to balance the channels. This result appears more pleasing to me and nicely shows more detail in the cometary projections and dust pillars pointing inward. Note: if using a much wider field of view, NGC 7822 becomes part of the "Cosmic Question Mark", and the area shown above is in the center of the "loop".

Processing in PixInsight involved performing color adjustments on the starless SHO combination image made using Starnet, and adding back stars and luminance highlights from a sharpened and denoised version of the Ha channel. This mode of creating the final master image is becoming a more convenient methodology versus prior ways of morphing down stars and deconvoluting a colored image with all stars present, though residual star artifacts left over from the Starnet process must be carefully examined and filled with appropriate color background pixels.
