Description

I went out yesterday morning (12/22/2021) at about 5 a.m. and saw this really cool moon halo.  The sky was pretty much covered with thin, high clouds except for one puffier cloud right in front of the moon that was nature’s “canvas” on which were painted the colors in the halo.  I took some cell phone shots and then ran inside to get our Sony alpha 6400 camera, with which I took some more images.  The cellphone cameras these days are almost impossible to use in anything other than some kind of automatic mode, which is fine for selfies and landscapes, but pretty awful for wide field astrophotos.  So the cellphone captured the cloud with a blown out moon and virtually no trace of the halo.  But at least I had the cloud.  The Sony, on the other hand, does have manual settings and that allowed me to capture the colors in the halo nicely, but not nearly as much of the cloud as the cellphone.  So I did my best to merge the two different shots to get a reasonable representation of the actual halo.
