Description

NGC 1491, also known as the Fossil Footprint Nebula, is a beautiful emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus, about 10,700 light-years away from Earth. The nebula gets its name from its unique shape, which resembles a fossilized footprint or a tadpole. This peculiar shape is created by the powerful radiation and stellar winds from the hot, massive young stars within the nebula, sculpting the surrounding gas and dust into intricate formations. The Fossil Footprint Nebula is an active star-forming region, where new stars are being born from the surrounding gas and dust. The energetic radiation from these young stars ionizes the hydrogen gas in the nebula, causing it to emit a reddish glow, typical of emission nebulae. These regions of ionized gas are often referred to as H II regions.
