Description

Messier 81 / Bode's Galaxy

Originally I was planning this to be a mosaic with M82, however I was having a bit of trouble processing the resultant image in a pleasing way for both galaxies, thus I've decided to process them both as their own images - starting with M81!

This ended up being a full NBRGB image in the end, although not necessarily for the obvious reason! When I tried to initially process this as a pure RGB image (see revision B) I was really struggling to get a colour balance that I was happy with, particularly I was struggling to get any kind of colour into the galactic arms without blowing out the core. I'm sure with a bit more patience and a lot of masks I could have made it work, but instead I decided to use the NB data as a bit of a crutch!

While I'm rather happy with the detail in the galaxy itself, unfortunately there was little to no sign of IFN in the raw stack and Holmberg IX was extremely faint - I guess the usual suspects, too much LP and not enough exposure time under the wrong moon! Maybe one to return too if I can get some clear nights under new moon.
