Description

This image was processed with Hubble Palette method. It is a processing technique done by the Hubble Space Telescope team and creates what is called “false color” imaging by using narrow-band filters and assigning the data captured with each narrow-band-filtered channel to one of the red, green, or blue colors in an RGB image.

The Rosetta Nebula is a  huge and beautiful molecular cloud lies about 5.000 light years away from Earth and can be seen in the sky on the constellation Monoceros.

The "petals" of this cosmic rose are actually a stellar nursery. Inside the nebula there is an open cluster of bright young stars designated NGC 2244. These stars formed about four million years ago from the nebular material, and their stellar winds are clearing a hole in the nebula's center, insulated by a layer of dust and hot gas.
Ultraviolet light from the hot cluster stars causes the surrounding nebula to glow.

Visible to the right  are globules of dark dust and gas that are slowly being eroded away by the energetic light and winds by nearby massive stars. Left alone long enough, the molecular-cloud globules would likely form stars and planets.
