Description

Thor’s Helmet—NGC 2459—in the Canis Major constellation is about 12,000 light years away. This nebula is being powered by the Wolf-Rayet star (HD 56925) you see near the center of the bubble. A Wolf-Rayet Star is an extremely hot star nearing the end of its life—a life that will end with a supernova explosion. W-R stars are fairly rare, but where they exist, these bubbie-type nebulas are fairly common. W-R stars have long since blown off their outer layers of hydrogen during their red giant phases and have begun fusing helium and other heavier elements. As a result, they typically spew oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and other elements at extremely high speed. When these heavier elements catch up to the slower hydrogen bubble, these variegated patterns and striations develop and light up due to ionization.
