Description

Dark nebulae form an interesting category of targets for imaging. Appearing initially as 'holes' in the background star field, longer exposures bring out the structures in their dusty clouds. The Lynds and Barnard catalogues cover the portion of the sky north of about -33 to -40 degrees declination and include many famous objects. The less well-known FeSt catalogue created by Feitzinger and Stuwe covers the southern hemisphere.

The image shows the two most southerly of the FeSt objects (numbers 212 and 213), both located south of -80 degrees. They form two dark 'knots' in the much larger Chamaeleon molecular cloud.
