Description

The Iris Nebula NGC7023, which got its name because of its shape and color reminiscent of the blue Petal flower, is a reflection nebula that can be seen from a distance of 1300 light-years in the constellation Cepheus, with a bright star in the middle that illuminates an area of several light-years in a bluish color, caused by the fact that the central one is massive, the light of a hot star is reflected from the many dust particles left over from its formation. The dark dust cloud in the photo, which is much larger than the blue part illuminated by the star, consists of very small solid particles and gases. The density of the dark nebula is very small, yet due to its vast extent it is opaque in the range of visible light, so it obscures the light of stars and other objects behind it. The photo was taken with a total exposure time of 30 hours over several days (months)!
