Description

Here is the beautiful Northern Triffid Nebula (NGC 1579) so called because of its resemblance to the more famous and more southerly Triffid Nebula (M20). This nebula can be found in the constellation of Perseus and is made more striking by the contrast of the bright reg emission nebula and the dusty reflection nebula.

The Northern Trifid glows strongly due to the many stars within it, most notable the young binary system LkHA 101 which contains a star many times more massive than the Sun which emits strongly in the red hydrogen alpha part of the spectrum. The dust is blue as it reflects the light from many stars.
