Description

While observing IC 5146, the presence of the dark nebula Barnard 168 (B168) significantly enhances the experience. This dark nebula creates a distinct obsidian path encircling the cluster. This pathway extends towards the west, resembling a trail trailing behind the Cocoon.

IC 5146 stands as a celestial cradle where the birth of stars continues unabated. Utilizing data from the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, scientists have collectively pinpointed the existence of numerous fledgling stellar entities. These juvenile stars make their appearance within both the emission nebula, an area where gases have been ionized by youthful massive stars, and the infrared-shrouded molecular cloud that gives rise to the distinct "tail" formation.
