Description

M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, is a planetary nebula located 1,360 light years from Earth in the constellation Vulpecula. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764 and shines at magnitude 7.5. The expansion rate of the nebula has been calculated at 31 km/s for an expansion of 2.3 arcseconds per year. From this it is derived that the nebula is about 14,600 years old but could be as young as 9,800 years.
