Description

It has been a slow late winter/early spring for imaging here. I spent most clear nights in March working on the big scope and collecting data for this project. I really am enjoying going after edge on galaxies lately. This is the first project having my camera set to 0 gain. Honestly I have not seen much difference compared to my last couple projects at gain 1600. But the math does say it is better. The only thing I did notice is horizontal banding in the calibration frames and the stacks for each channel. The banding was barely there, maybe a few ADU above the background. So after processing it is not visible.

I was a little bummed to pour over 18hr into H-alpha data for this and not really get anything. Meaning there really isn't much H-alpha data in the galaxy like we see in face on spirals. Though the whole galaxy does show up. Just no HA pockets of gas or jets.

Seeing was all over the map on this one with nightly averages from 2.09"->4.36" (taken via SBIG SBS SM-2 monitor). Actually the last night I was collecting data the first have was hovering around 1.2" and at times a touch below 1". Ever since I got this seeing monitor, I realized my scope is likely the limiting factor and not the location. So I am continuing to improve this 12" to produce the best raw data I can. To that end, I have acquired a small CNC machine to cut custom aluminum parts. First big project is a one-piece spider similar to what AstroBackyard makes, but bigger and beefier.
