Description

I observed this object on 5 October 2021 at the Okie-Tex Star Party using a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian: This globular cluster looks like a 14th magnitude star. It is right next to a 12th magnitude star that provides a nice comparison. With averted vision I had a hint of a halo but, at best, it was barely there. This is the most distant globular cluster I have observed.

Note: Upon further inspection I have concluded that the 14th magnitude star mentioned in my observation is a foreground star.

Palomar 14 is about 3 to 4 billion years younger than a typical galactic cluster.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: Not classified (Probably XII)
Distance: 243,671 LY
Type: Far Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Above and on far side of core.
Any stars resolved: No
Undergoing Core Collapse: No
