Description

To most of us living in the Southern Hemisphere, the Southern Cross and the Pointers (Alpha and Beta Centuari) is an iconic view, readliy seen from even the most light-polluted venue.  It is also one of the first things visitors to the south hemisphere want to see.

I was putting together a public presentation for the Aoteroa Astrotourism Academy (which we are pleased to host this year in Otago), and realised I didn't have an image of this iconic field.  So I assembled together from 12 of the Astrobin Community survey fields currently in progress.  Although this doesn't use the mosaicing method being explored for the survey by @James Tickner , the PI mosaic software worked OK in this instance.   The mosaic was done at 15arcsec/pixel because my 2017 Mac not longer has the capacity to process at the native 5arcsec/pixel.   [Or it is that I no longer have the patience to wait?]   Nevertheless I thought my AB friends would like to see it.

While not plentiful in bright nebula [Running Chicken aside], this part of the Milky Way is rich in dark lanes and nebula.  The Coalsack [or Te Pattiki: The Flounder in Maori] is partcularly prominent of course, but there is a lot to explore here.
