Description

NGC 6820 is an emission nebula located in the constellation Vulpecula. It is about 6,000 light-years away from Earth. The nebula is about 40 arcminutes across, or about 1/3 of a degree. It is a beautiful object, with a complex structure of pillars, filaments, and bubbles. The nebula is illuminated by a young open cluster of stars called NGC 6823. The cluster is about 2 million years old, and contains several hot, massive stars. These stars emit powerful ultraviolet radiation, which ionizes the gas in the nebula, causing it to glow. The pillars and filaments in the nebula are formed by the interaction of the stellar winds from the stars in NGC 6823 with the surrounding gas and dust. The stellar winds are strong enough to blow away the gas and dust, but they are not strong enough to completely destroy it. Instead, they carve out channels through the material, leaving behind the pillars and filaments.
