Description

I have been struggling with this image and I need to put it aside and move on. I've learned some valuable lessons and when I attempt this again I will hopefully be up the curve a little higher in processing expertise. I like many features if the image , and dislike others.

The main issue was caused by a reflection of a nearby bright star with made it through the baffles of my CDK20. I had many issues with such reflections early in my experience with this telescope but Planewave graciously gave me a new 3D printed baffle which really improved the rejection of bright stars just outside the sensor field. But, in my haste to collect data before I travelled for 2 weeks in April, I didn't check my images in detail with stretching and found out later that I had a reflection scattering across the tip of the galaxy. Had I checked, I could have picked a different guide star and likely eliminated this, but alas, I didn't😢. So this reflection makes setting the black point tricky to try to avoid clipping, yet reject most of this stray light.

I also wanted to see if I could also collect some OIII narrowband in addition to the Ha. After working up the data, I found that only one galactic feature was enhanced with the OIII. Now I wish I had spent those hours gathering more Ha to bring out more of the interesting Ha structure of this galaxy.

I continue to learn to use Generalized Hyperbolic Stretching. I think the "arms" of the galaxy are a little too opaque and I never could get the stretches perfect to my eye.

On the positive side, I was pleased with the details and color of the core of the galaxy.

Thanks for looking and if you read all the way to this point, thanks for reading!
